Image
It’s that time of year again! Canadians are gearing up for sunny escapes to all-inclusive resorts, luxurious cruise ships, or exotic destinations. For many, this means the thrill of warm weather, beautiful beaches, and much-needed relaxation. But for some, the excitement of the destination is overshadowed by anxiety about the journey itself. I’ve noticed in recent weeks that the topic of upcoming vacations has dominated conversations at work. While many of my co-workers and friends are already buzzing with excitement about their trips, others are dreading the travel process. Whether it’s flying, dealing with airports, or navigating security lines, the thought of crowds, tight spaces, and endless waiting can be overwhelming. If you’re one of those who feels a wave of dread at the thought of your upcoming travel plans, you are not alone. Believe me, I get it. While I personally enjoy flying, the stress of airport security—crowded lines, impatient passengers, and the pressure of...

Experiences of war, what a mental health journey!

During my military career, I had the privilege and burden of serving in some of the most challenging and harrowing environments. I completed two tours of duty, one in 1993 and another in 2005, each leaving an indelible mark on my life. The first tour, in the heart of a War, exposed me to the brutal realities of ethnic conflict, violence, and destruction. As a young service member, I saw firsthand the impact of war on innocent civilians and experienced the weight of operating in a combat zone where death, chaos, and devastation were constant companions. The emotional toll of witnessing suffering and loss, not only on the battlefield but also in the aftermath, was overwhelming. It was in those moments, navigating the complexity of wartime engagement, that I learned the true meaning of survival, camaraderie, and sacrifice. The sights, sounds, and emotions from that time are etched in my memory, and they forever changed my understanding of what it means to be human. Twelve years later,...

Crashes - Coincidence, faith or scripted?

I retired from the Canadian Forces after 23 years of Service at CFB Borden, Ontario and in 2015, I started working in Ottawa. While our house was for sale, I traveled every weekend between the two locations. I would leave Ottawa after work on Friday and return on Sunday afternoon. When the spring hit and weather got nicer, I started using my motorcycle; a bran new Ducati, it was a beauty! The winding roads through the Hastings region mountains between Renfrew and Orillia, made the rides so much fun.    The inherent dangers of riding were obvious to me and so, I remained conscious of animals and other hazards a might face during these long treks. Riding mid-afternoons would greatly reduce the risks…so I thought! One beautiful Friday after work, I jumped on my motorcycle and headed westbound highway 417. Although it was a beautiful end of May with the sun shining and weather was warm, something did not feel right.   I had this weird feeling over me, the type of feeling yo...
